Love That Is Not Enough

1 John 4:8: He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

Rejecting Christ is rejecting love. The love of mortal men and women is not enough. Love of self is even less sufficient. Only the love of God can meet our deepest needs. The love of God did not and could not penetrate the stony heart I had before Jesus saved me. Even now my flesh tries to lead me away from His love. I thank God that my flesh will not and cannot succeed.

Romans 8:38-39: For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

A number of acquaintances, neighbors, relatives and well known individuals that I have known or known about have attempted to take their own lives. Some have succeeded. They all seem to have had some things in common. They seemed successful. They seemed to have fairly high moral standards. They seemed popular and well beloved. They seemed to have many who admired, respected and enjoyed them. I myself admired, respected and enjoyed some of them. I did not know them as well as I thought I did.

Some of them took their lives before I became a Christian. I was not very troubled about it then, just puzzled. Now that I am a Christian I am troubled about them because none of them ever communicated to me that they had a relationship with God. None of the good things they had seemed to be sufficient substitutes for the love of God. I believe that none of them had personally experienced the love of God.

Romans 5:5: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

I know that God*s love has made my life worthwhile to me and to a few others.
